Typing Speed Test
Test your typing speed in Words Per Minute (WPM), measure accuracy, and benchmark keystroke consistency in real time.
Your Typing Performance
Standard 5-character net word count metric.
How is Typing Speed Calculated?
In professional and academic typing assessments, speed is standardized to eliminate bias from short versus long words. One standardized "word" is defined as 5 keystrokes (including letters, punctuation, spaces, and numbers).
Gross WPM
Total keystrokes divided by 5, then divided by time in minutes. Measures raw physical finger speed regardless of typos.
Net WPM (Actual)
Calculated as Gross WPM minus uncorrected errors per minute. This is the industry-standard number used on employment tests.
Cadence Consistency
Measures the variance between keystroke intervals. High consistency indicates smooth touch-typing without pausing or hesitating.
Typing Speed Milestones
- 20 – 35 WPM: Average hunt-and-peck typist.
- 40 – 55 WPM: Average touch typist (standard business professional).
- 60 – 80 WPM: Fast typist (programmers, journalists, transcriptionists).
- 90 – 110+ WPM: Competitive typist (top 1% globally).
